How to Choose the Best Kaba Door Locks

Kaba (now Dormakaba), has a reputation for producing high-quality security items worldwide. You’ll soon see why.

We wanted to test their affordability, reliability, durability, and features. Also, to see how easy it was to install them.

We compiled a list with both electronic and mechanical door locks that are fully keyless or can be keyed to give you an idea of the range of products that every buyer would find useful.

This criterion was chosen to reflect our experience and those of other reviewers (except in the rare case of a fluke).

While Kaba’s line of products can be somewhat overwhelming, we selected 8 commercial-grade door locks that we would buy again from Amazon.

Like we said before, there aren’t any bad choices here, just make sure it will fit before you buy.

We reviewed the Best Keyless Cabinet Locks to protect personal items and important work papers.

This lock was easy to install as the 70mm backset matched perfectly with our doors.

To be certain, we recommend measuring your doors before you purchase this product.

Check This guide will help you make it easier: How To Change a Door Lock in 5 Steps.

It is flush against the door and doesn’t have any gaps.

We tested it by kicking the lock a few more times. Our knees were sure to give out before this lock.

We were a little concerned because it sticks out about 2 ½” from the door, but it was proven to be a nonissue.

Kaba claims that the solid-metal pushbuttons are vandal-resistant, and they performed exactly as we expected in our tests.

Its simple, durable design makes it an excellent choice for many commercial, industrial, and even residential purposes.

This door lock can be used anywhere from an office stockroom, to your shed at home, or even on your car.

The lever can even withstand adverse weather conditions.

Durability

How long do you think this lock will last?

We were able to test it and feel quite confident that it will protect us from intruders. They have been used for over 10 years by long-term users.

Since it doesn’t require batteries or have many working parts, the mechanical functions contained in this lock are simple, and will likely hold up well over time.

Maybe that’s a downside for you, maybe it isn’t, but if you were looking for more programmable features, this door lock probably isn’t for you.

This is a very common function for mechanical commercial door locks.

2. Runner Up: Kaba E-Plex – Electronic Keyless Lock, Kaba Cylinder

Product Ratings

Affordability2/5Reliability5/5Durability5/5Features4/5Installation3/5

Keyed : Yes | Keyed: Yes | Features: Multiple Code Settings (User, Manager, Passage w/ Optional Timed Setting), Pushbutton Lock | Sizing Information: Pre-Assembled to Fit 41-50mm Doors, 2 ¾” Backset, Standard 2 ⅛” Cross-Bore, 5” Minimum Stile Required

What We Liked

  • Pushbutton lock
  • Works with either left- or right-handed doors
  • The features

What We Didn’t Like

  • It is costly
  • Batteries need to be replaced
  • It’s heavy, which can make installation a little annoying
  • It can be difficult to program codes

It may surprise you to see the Kaba E-Plex doorlock come in second place, since it has so many advantages.

However, the reality is that it is expensive for a door lock, and can be complicated to set up if you don’t already know what you’re doing.

It also comes with so many bells & whistles that it can be overwhelming at times.

However, it is a runner-up if you are looking for something that’s going to get a lot of use, while still having a Grade 1 Security Rating.

Price & Quality

It isn’t cheap, but you are definitely getting what you pay for.

If you’re looking at this as a viable option to secure a warehouse, a high-traffic office space, or a BANK, this is worth checking out.

This lock requires 3 AAA batteries and has an UL/ILC rating of 3-hours

Channeling our inner child, we tested Kaba’s claim that the batteries would hold up for 100,000 rotations.

However, we admittedly didn’t get that far before admitting defeat. And don’t worry, there is also a key override function.

The keypad and handle held up well and reminded us of old payphone days.

We were not expecting to be pleasantly surprised by the durability of the keypad. It is shrouded with two raised edges on either end to keep anyone else from seeing any keycode being entered (nice touch!).).

Installation

We found that the latch took approximately 45 minutes to properly sit.

We found it especially annoying to line up just right due to this weight.

However, once it was turned on, it felt more likely that the door would open than the electronic locks.

Features

This commercial door lock couldn’t be more versatile.

The handle can be reversed. We also liked the option of setting passive mode with a timer. This allowed the door to open freely for a certain period of time before locking or requiring a code.

Depending on your requirements, this setting can be switched on, off, or timed.

It can also be used on internal doors and external doors in almost any weather condition without worrying about sticking or malfunctioning.

Despite this, programming can be difficult when you first get used to it.

You can set up to 100 codes to unlock your doors, and we imagine that the software optiOn would make this easier, but we weren’t able to test that.

Features: None | Keyed: No | Features: None | Sizing Information: Fits 41-54mm Doors, 16mm Deadlocking Spring Latch, 5” Minimum Stile Required

What We Liked

  • Simple operation
  • Most affordable option
  • Fully keyless
  • Fully mechanical

What We Didn’t Like

  • There are no features
  • Only one programmable access key

There really isn’t too much to say here, if you’re looking for a budget-friendly alternative to a back gate or shed, this will do just fine.

This Kaba door lock does not have any features and is simple to use.

Quality & Function

It works as you might expect, and as it is fully keyless and mechanical – there is no need to worry about replacing batteries, or having too many working parts that could fail, and will need replacing.

Installation

Some reviewers reported that the included template can be off depending on the doors you’re using, so be aware of that.

Other reviewers also noted difficulties in understanding the instruction manual.

In our test, we could see how these users could have had issues, but we were lucky enough that we didn’t even require the template, it just fit.

It was used on a back entry gate. We were very happy with the results for the price.

You shouldn’t need to call a locksmith to figure it out.

What We Liked

  • Simple operation
  • Multiple codes can be assigned to tiered staff access

What We Didn’t Like

  • Push to lock but not push
  • Still quite expensive, according to reports

Similar to the other E-plex Electronic Keyless Locks that we mentioned before, this has similar features including a key override function that’s hidden from view.

The main differences between the handles are the quality and the absence of a push-lock function.

Despite not having these extra features, these industrial doors locks are just as sturdy and secure as the other option for nearly $100 less, which is a pretty good deal.

Commercial Reviews

We noticed that several other reviewers were satisfied after using the Kaba E-Plex for their rental properties. It can store up to 100 keys codes and allows for temporary access.

We think it’s a great fit in that, or any office or commercial space.

What We Liked

  • Easy operation
  • Multiple codes can be assigned to tiered staff access
  • Keyed entry is an option
  • Reliable

What We Didn’t Like

  • Push to lock but not push
  • Batteries
  • This is the most expensive option

The E-Plex cylindrical lock, which is simple and intuitive for your needs, has a wide variety of features.

Features

This lock offers keyed entry, in addition to all the other features found in the previous lock.

This option is also one of the most expensive locks on this list.

However, we couldn’t help but feel that the addition of the locking cylinder added a nice weight to the handle and more durability.

Multiple key entries can be set up to 7 pins long, just like other E-Plex options. However, you have the added flexibility to use a key to gain entry if needed.

6. Easy to Install: Kaba Simplex 7100 Series Steel Mechanical Pushbutton Auxiliary lock

Affordability5/5Reliability5/5Durability5/5Features1/5Installation5/5

Features Weather Resistant, Single-Access Code | Keyed: No | Features: Weather Resistant, Single Access Code | Sizing Information: 25mm Tubular Deadbolt, 60mm Backset, Flat Front Face Plate, 4” Minimum Stile Required

What We Liked

  • Quality at a great price
  • Keyless entry
  • Weather-resistant
  • Use with Left- or Right-Handed Doors
  • No batteries!

What We Didn’t Like

  • Only one programmable code is available
  • Inadequacy of features
  • If the door is heavy, thumb turn can be difficult.

This Kaba lock is a direct comparison to our best overall for a fraction of the price. We would opt for that one unless the sizing just doesn’t seem like it would work for your door.

Quality & Function

This entry is larger than the previous entry and has a 60mm backingset. This means that it fits most predrilled doors.

The thumb turn had more difficulty turning than our Best Overall pick. However, it was a heavier door.

Other than that, we were able tell that the locks were almost identical in terms of quality and durability.

Both are made to withstand the elements.

7. Best Single Code Industrial Lock: Kaba5021XKWL-25D-41 Cylindrical Push Butlock Lock

Product Ratings

Affordability2/5Reliability5/5Durability5/5Features3/5Installation3/5

Keyed : Yes | Keyed: Yes | Features: Weather Resistant, Single Access Code | Sizing Information: 2 ¾” Backset, ½” Throw Latch, Pre-Assembled for Left-Handed Doors (Can be Switched)

What We Liked

  • Keyless entry
  • Weather-resistant
  • Use with Left- or Right-Handed Doors
  • No batteries!

What We Didn’t Like

  • Only one programmable code is available
  • It is costly

The Kaba 5000 Series Cylindrical push button lock with lever is the most expensive entry on this list.

This industrial lock feels very secure to us because of its weight.

Features

These locks are the middle of the pack when it comes to features. The lever is strong and can be keyed for entry. This makes it very versatile for all applications.

The pushbutton lock was also helpful in preventing us from forgetting to lock it when we left and came back.

It was also fully mechanical, which was a nice addition to what this lock offers. We felt more confident installing it on exterior doors without worrying about electrical components or batteries wearing out.

Price & Installation

It would be remiss of us not to mention that there is only one code. This can be a downer or not.

It may seem difficult to justify a product with so few features for the price. These locks will make you feel safe.

Are you unsure about the price? We have a guide for Understanding Door Lock Prices Cost vs. Security you should read.

On On the other hand, it was very easy to set and then enter our key code to gain access without any keys sticking.

However, its weight made it difficult for initial installation to be arranged and attached.

It really didn’t matter what the weather conditions were, or how many times we slammed the door or jiggled the knob, it held up to the stress with ease.

Finally, weighing in at almost 9 lbs for non-electric locks felt a lot.

It would add considerable weight to doors and we can see how it could cause problems with wooden doors with wider doors.

That wasn’t our experience, but it’s worth considering before purchasing.

Overall

This industrial door lock is versatile and can withstand a lot of stress.

It is a mechanical replacement for the electronic locks mentioned above and provides the same level in security, but without all the bells or whistles.

This will work fine if you have the funds, only need one code and a mechanical alternative for industrial-grade electronic lock.

8. Best for frequent use: Kaba 1011-26D – 41 Cylindrical Pushbutton Nko Us26D

Ratings for Products

Affordability3/5Reliability5/5Durability5/5Features2/5Installation4/5

Lock Type: Mechanical | Keyed: No | Features: Weather Resistant, Single Access Code | Sizing Information: 2 ¾” Backset and Throw, Use with Left or Right Handed Doors, Can be Used on 1 ⅜”-2 ¼” Doors

What We Liked

  • Keyless entry
  • Weather-resistant
  • Use with Left- or Right-Handed Doors

What We Didn’t Like

  • Only one programmable code is available
  • It is costly
  • It seems that the information about sizing is not correct

There aren’t many frills when it comes to this Kaba cylindrical pushbutton lock, and we like that it’s pretty straightforward.

This commercial lock is easy to use and quick to access because of its simplicity.

If you’re planning to go in and out of whichever door this is installed on, it’s just right. We were able get in and out quickly without any problems.

Although we would prefer that the lock came with a lever, it is much more cost-effective than the levered options.

A lever would likely be even faster, but a knob works perfectly.

Price & Quality

Let’s talk about price. While it still sits in the higher range, this industrial door lock doesn’t lack anything but features.

Other reviewers stated that they have used these locks for up to 23 years without ever having to replace them.

They replaced them with the same model when the time was right.

Take this with a grain salt. Some users complained about the tendency of keys sticking to their fingers.

But our testing made us feel like those unfortunate buyers received a faulty product, and that they really shouldn’t deter you from making your own judgments.

The knob was still strong once installed but we felt it could be a problem if it is used for a lot of time.

This is where price really does make a difference, compared with our previous entry on the list.

This industrial lock, like many others on the list, was given a 3-hour UL/ULC Fire rating.

The Winner

We believe the Kaba Simplex 7100 Series Auxiliary Lock has the best value for multiple uses.

It is versatile and easy to install and will last for a long period of time.

How to choose the best Kaba Door Locks

Take into account your needs

You might think about what features you would most benefit from and whether it would be worth paying more for an electric commercial door lock that you are more comfortable using for your business.

A Kaba E-Plex series electronic keypad that allows you to set key codes to different levels of users would be a great addition for any office with many staff members.

It can become tedious, especially if it isn’t possible to set and reset pins often, especially without additional software.

Even though the electronic commercial locks have a 100,000 rotation rating, it can still be difficult to change the batteries when the time comes.

On the other hand, if you’re planning on using mechanical locks, you can expect an industrial-strength lock with fewer points of failure.

You can expect to only have one programmable code that may need to be reprogrammed quite often.

If you’re someone that carries around a lot of keys, you might want to think about how keyless locks would benefit you.

You can always choose one that has a keyed option for added security.

What’s Your Budget?

Although there are many good options at an affordable cost, they may not suit your needs.

If you’re only replacing 1 or 2 locks in your commercial or industrial space, a pricier option may be of no concern, but if you’re needing to replace multiple, it adds up.

Don’t Forget to Measure Your Doors First

The majority of the Kaba door locks we have listed should work fine, but there are many other doors.

It’s important to take all of that into consideration when making a purchase for multiple doors.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
